This material is held atUniversity of Nottingham Manuscripts and Special Collections

Scope and Content

The collection contains three items of correspondence relating to an oil painting by the artist Cornelius Johnson (1593-1661) in the possession of Frederick B. Daniell and Son, art dealers, of 32 Cranbourn Street, Leicester Square, London.

There are two letters from the firm to Richard W. Goulding asking him, as an authority on the work of Janssen, to identify the person in the painting, presumed to be Lucius Carey, Lord Falkland. There is also one copy letter from Goulding explaining why he doubts that the picture is of Carey. The letters cover the period 28 February and 4 March 1929.

The letters complement the family and estate papers of the Dukes of Portland held in Manuscripts and Special Collections at the University of Nottingham.

Administrative / Biographical History

Richard W. Goulding (1868-1929) was for many years librarian to the 6th Duke of Portland at Welbeck Abbey.
