Genealogical research of Bernard B. Granger, 1921-1947

The collection comprises one notebook and 15 leaves of correspondence and other loose papers. The collection is the product of Bernard Granger's research into his family history, conducted between 1921 and 1947. The research draws on family vaults, memorials, parish registers, Bibles and deeds. The correspondence is largely from clergymen in the East Midlands replying to Granger with details from memorials and registers etc. Much of this information has been copied over to the volume. The volume contains one family tree, 'Genealogical table of the family of Smith to which Mary, the wife of John Granger belonged'. The other people and families represented in the volume are:

Granger and Baldwin families of Nottingham; Chamberlin family of Annesby, Laughton, Radcliffe on Soar and Willoughby, Nottinghamshire, Stanton by Bridge, Derbyshire and Sileby, East Norton and Rampstone, Leicestershire; John Granger (1787-1837), Mary his wife (1791-1873) and their families; Rev. Francis Smith (1719-1796) of Melbourne, Leicestershire and his descendants; Thomas Darnell (c.1818-1866), Ann his wife and the Darnell family of Blaby, Leicestershire; Smith family of Nottingham and Barton in the Beans in Leicestershire; John Granger of Castle Donington, Leicestershire; Hagan Clarke (née Chamberlin) of West Melton, Leicestershire; Mira Smith of Wisbech, Cambridgeshire; Blount family of Laughton, Nottinghamshire; and Almey, Blaxley, Cockrill, Bakewell, Renal and Goldsworthy families.

Bernard Booth Granger (born 1874) was the younger son of James Granger (1827-1918) and his wife Marie. Bernard appears in the 1881 census, aged 6, living with his family at 25 All Saints' Street, Nottingham. He was listed as a member of the Thoroton Society of Nottingham from 1931 to 1953. He died in 1955.

Bernard's father James Granger was a founder member of the Thoroton Society and one of its Vice-Presidents, and author of "Old Nottingham: its streets, people, &c.", published in two series in 1902 and 1904. James Granger's mother was Mary Smith, who married John Granger in 1815, and his grandfather was James Smith (1764-1847), lay preacher at Broad Street Baptist Chapel in Nottingham. Mary Smith's brother was William Booth (1768-1836), farmer, of Kirkby-in-Ashfield.

Bernard Granger's cousin was Professor F.S. Granger (1864-1936), Professor of Classics and Philosophy at University College, Nottingham. Professor Granger's father was Francis Smith Granger (born 1833), another of the sons of John and Mary Granger.
