Papers relating to the Clifton family and their estates with provenance separate from the Clifton collection, 1847

The collection at present contains one item. It is a legal document, a 'release and discharge', dated 11 December 1847 (MS 592/1). The document, written on 9 membranes of parchment, relates to the distibution of returns on investments of trust funds made under the will of Sir Gervas Clifton, dated 23 May 1814. A sum of money was transferred by Sophia Charlotte Markham of London, Sir John Lister Kaye of Yorkshire, George William Tireman of Gainsborough, Yorkshire, Rt Hon. James Earl of Haddington and John Campbell, Marquess of Breadalbane, George and Georgina Bailie of Berwickshire, and Edward Markham of Westminster to Messers Halford Boodle and L. Wickham. The document reviews the terms of the will and explains the distribution of trust fund income, money, property and possessions.

This is an artificial collection created by the University of Nottingham's Department of Manuscripts and Special Collections to bring together research papers and loose manuscripts relating to the Clifton family that have a provenance separate from that of the Clifton collection (reference code: Cl).

Sir Gervase Clifton of Clifton Hall, 6th Baronet, was born in 1744. He succeeded to the baronetcy and married Frances Egerton in the same year, 1766. He died on 26 September 1815.
