Caera Papers

A collection of 74 items relating to various members of the Owen family and the administration of the estate. The papers include copies of wills of members of the Caera and Gadlys families, 1823-38; diaries of the Rev. Thomas Owen of Upton Scudamore, Wilts. (and Rhiwlas), 1807-11, and of Owen Owen of Caera, 1822-38; documents concerning the school and college days of John and Owen, sons of Owen Owen of Caera, 1811-15; account books relating to labourers and servants at Caera, 1839-86; stock accounts and balance sheets, 1890-94; rate books, 1863-5; overseers' accounts, 1877-88; and other papers relating to the parish of Llanfair-yng-Nghornwy; deeds pertaining to the Llanfihangel Estate, 1821-75; maps and plans of lands in the parishes of Llaneilian, Llanfachraeth, Llanfihangel, Llansadwrn, Llanfaelog, Llangristiolus, Llanidan, Llanfair-yng-Nghornwy and Penmon, 1802-1919; tithe receipts and accounts, Llaneilian, Coedana and Rhosbeirio, 1836-70; letters and papers concerning Pensarn National School, 1834-644; vestry book of the parish of Llaneilian, 1838-52; deeds relating to Porth Eilian, Craig Lwyd, etc. in Llaneilian, 1663-1854; and notes of sermons preached by the Rev. Thomas Owen of Upton Scudamore and the Rev. John Owen of Llaneilian.

The Owens were substantial farmers and stout Anglicans, allied to the Owens of Rhiwlas near Pentraeth in Anglesey. One family member, John Owen, became the Rector of Llaneilian in Anglesey from 1837 to his death in 1870; and another, the Rev. Thomas Owen, who died in 1812 was a fellow of the Queen's College Oxford. From 1902-1930, the last direct descendant of the branch, Miss Mary Hester Owen, farmed Caera.
