Administrative / Biographical History

Loughborough College of Education originated from the Department for the Training of Teachers opened at Loughborough College in 1930. This was also known as the East Midlands Training College and offered training for teachers of Handicraft. Physical Education was introduced as a principal subject later, in 1936 (post-certificate course) and 1945 (two year certificate course). It was granted academic autonomy in 1951 and when Loughborough College was divided into four separate institutions reflecting its main areas of interest, it became Loughborough Training College. Along with Loughborough College of Art and Loughborough College of Further Education it continued to be maintained by Leicestershire County Council under a joint governing body. It was originally a constituent member of the Institute of Education of Nottingham University, through which awards were granted, but this function was transferred to the Institute of Education of Loughborough University of Technology in 1971. Women were first admitted in 1965. In 1967 the College was renamed Loughborough College of Education and in 1977 it amalgamated with Loughborough University of Technology, reuniting two parts of the old Loughborough College. It functioned as the Department of Education at Loughborough University 1977-2001
