Papers of Hugh Barker

The papers include:

• bonds undertaking to repay sums of money
• bonds given to Barker undertaking to observe covenants in leases not found in this collection
• title deeds of Barker's Piddington and Ambrosden (Oxfordshire) property
• an acquittance to Mary Barker, widow, from parishoners of Piddington for 20 bequeathed to the poor there by Barker, 1633/4
• deeds relating to the wardship of Barker's daughter Mary, 1633-9
• letters to Barker 1621/2-1632; and to his widow, 1632-5, mainly concerning their Sussex affairs
• acquittances, most of them given to Hugh or Mary Barker, 1596-1646/7, including a receipt from Sir John Wray to Hugh Barker for 74 6s. 8d. collected in Oxford University for the relief of the poor of Lincoln during a plague, 1632
• other miscellanea.

Hugh Barker was educated at New College, Oxford; in June 1605 he graduated D.L. at Oxford, being about this time chancellor of the diocese. He was admitted to the college of civilians in June 1607. Barker was also master of the free grammar school at Chichester for a time. According to the Dictionary of National Biography the statement that he was dean of the court of arches in London, for several years before his death in 1632, is an error.
