Scope and Content
Administrative / Biographical History
The Association of Engineering & Shipbuilding Draughtsmen was formed in 1913 . In 1965, the association became known as the Draughtsmen & Allied Technicians Association. The association acted as a trade union for its members, providing support during disputes with employers and protecting and campaigning for greater rights in terms of working hours, pay and conditions. The Association also paid out illness and redundancy money and dispute money.
The Draughtsmen & Allied Technical Association: Paisley and Renfrew Branch, based in Paisley, Renfrewshire, Scotland, was established at some point prior to 1971 . The branch’s area covered many manufacturing and engineering business who employed draughtsmen such as Chrysler (Scotland), car builders, Paisley; Carlton Die Casting, die casters, Paisley; A & F Craig Ltd, engineers, Paisley; and Fullerton, Hodgart & Barclay, engineers.
The Branch was administered by a Branch Council who met fortnightly with monthly general meetings for all members held at Paisley Labour Club and then later the Paisley Trades Council Social Club. The committee consisted of c10 members including the president, chairman, treasurer, registrar and minute secretary. The Branch was affiliated to the Scottish Trades Union Congress (STUC) and the Paisley Trades Council and had elected representatives who attended their meetings. The association also had links to the Workmens’ Educational Association and organised educational lectures and encouraged members to attend the national Association’s summer schools.
By 1975 , the union had become known as TASS, the Technical, Administrative and Supervisory Staffs union. In January 1988 , TASS amalgamated with the Association of Scientific, Technical and Managerial Staffs (ASTMS) to form the Manufacturing, Science & Finance union (MSF).
