Material relating to family and local history, including coursework undertaken during a History Certificate course at Birkbeck, 2008, and teaching materials for a later WEA course on the subject taught by HG.

Material relating to HG's work on pre-retirement training, including Birkbeck BA and MA dissertations (MSc in Life Couse Development), 1991-1992, work undertaken for the Ford Motor Company Ltd, 1997, and training for BBC staff, 1990-1991.

Papers relating to adult education, including work with NIACE (National Institute of Adult Education), ACACE (Advisory Centre for Adult and Continuing Education), ECA (Educational Centres Association) and North Havering College of Adult Education.

Howard Gilbert was an adult educator and lifelong advocate for adult learning and learners.

He was an active member of educational charity NIACE (National Institute of Adult Continuing Education), which was founded in 1921 as the British Institute of Adult Education and later merged with the Centre for Economic and Social Inclusion on 2016 to form the Learning and Work Institute.

He was joint editor of ‘A Passion for Learning: celebrating 80 years of NIACE support for adult learning’ published in 2002.
