A charitable trust, the Schools Curriculum Award was established in 1982 by the Society of Education Officers and the editorial advisory panel of Education 'to celebrate curriculum design and teaching'. With an emphasis on the achievements of the individual school, it aims to put 'the school at the heart of the community' and 'to identify and celebrate schools which have established a broad and balanced curriculum enriched from the local community and environment'. It is open to all schools in the United Kingdom, those put forward being visited by voluntary assessors. Works of art were commissioned by the Trustees from which successful schools could make their choice of award. It also administers the Jerwood Award for individuals or institutions who had made a significant contribution to the theory and practice of education.

A reader wishing to publish any quotation of information, including pictorial, derived from any archive material must apply in writing for prior permission from the Archivist or other appropriate person(s) as indicated by the Archivist. A limited number of photocopies may be supplied at the discretion of the Archivist.

The collection was transferred in 1993 to the National Primary Education Archive at Bishop Grosseteste College, Lincoln, from various locations in London, Hertford and Warwick. It was transferred from BGC to the Institute of Education in 1998. A second deposit was made in 2003.
