Administrative / Biographical History
John Caird was born in Greenock, Inverclyde, Scotland, in 1820 . He was the brother of the philosopher Professor Edward Caird. John Caird was educated in Greenock and received his MA from the University of Glasgow , Scotland, in 1845 . In 1847 he was Minister at the Parish of Lady Yester's, Edinburgh, Scotland and then from 1849 at Errol, Perthshire, Scotland, where he stayed until 1857 . In 1857, he was appointed to be the minister of Park Church, Glasgow, it was also in this year that he preached before Queen Victoria at Balmoral, Royal Deeside, Scotland. In 1860, he was awarded an honorary degree of DD from the University of Glasgow, and in 1862 he was appointed Professor of Divinity at the same university. John Caird was appointed Principal of the University of Glasgow in 1873 . He was awarded an honorary degree of LLD from the University of Edinburgh, Scotland, in 1884 . He published many works, including the Introduction to the philosophy of religion (1880 ). He died in 1898 .
