    • 3 vols held in 1 box, manuscript All the volumes are finely-bound in dark blue leather with gilt edges. The box is purpose-built of wood covered in dark blue leather with gilt lettering embossed on the spine, as follows: PRIVATE MSS./MEREDITH'S/JOURNAL & LETTERS. It has been so constructed as to resemble a bound volume and has a lock on the outer edge to which there is now apparently no key. The volumes bear the armorial bookplate of Sir Philip Rose on their flyleaves. The box and flyleaves also bear much marbling, and there is a light brown padded silk lining inside the box. The main text of the journal is written in a different hand from that found in the introduction

Scope and Content

The correspondence comprises copies of Meredith's letters to his sister Georgiana Meredith and to his uncle William Meredith, written during the trip, and of correspondence between the two families written after Meredith's death at Cairo, July 19th 1831, arranged and extracted by Sir Philip Rose from the originals in the possession of the Rev. Edward Higgins, September 1881, after Disraeli's death. There is also an extended introduction by Rose, including a family tree.
