Scope and Content
Administrative / Biographical History
The Charity Commission, established in 1853, monitors the activities of charities in England and Wales on behalf of the government, and receives information and accounts from the trustees of the charities. These are public records, and one of the Commission's responsibilities is to hand over the records to the Public Record Office (now The National Archives), which selects those meriting permanent retention. Those not selected are offered to the relevant local record offices, and if unwanted are destroyed. These papers deal with charities in Gwent.
