Scope and Content

The collection includes; papers relating to the Labour Committee for Europe that include minutes, accounts and constitution documents, correspondence files, pamphlets, press releases and briefings. It also includes British Labour Party reports and correspondence regarding policy towards the Common Market and a range of publications and correspondence from other organisations linked with the UK and its relationship with Europe.

Administrative / Biographical History

The Labour Movement for Europe is a Socialist Society affiliated to the Labour Party whose aim is to improve and broaden the understanding of the European Union and its potential throughout the wider Labour movement and the United Kingdom. It is the home of the pro-Europeans in the Labour and trade union movement. It campaigned with other organisations in the Labour movement for the UK to remain at the heart of the EU, exercising influence in accordance with its progressive values.

The collection has been arranged in 4 series; Labour Committee for Europe (includes 5 sub-series: Minutes, Constitution, Membership & Financial Records, Correspondence, Reports and Speeches, Pamphlets and leaflets and Press releases, notes and briefings), Labour Party policy towards the Common Market, Publications, and records of Other Organisations.

Custodial History

The archive is deposited at the People's History Museum (formerly the National Museum of Labour History) in Manchester. The collection is now held at the Labour History Archives and Study Centre (LHASC), which is based at the People's History Museum.
