Scope and Content

The greater part of the voluminous correspondence and the file of documents in this series is devoted to work carried out under Zuckerman's direction on behalf of the Sub-Committee. This research focussed on investigating the capacity of dogs to detect buried explosives. The experiments themselves were designed and supervised by Drs J.T. Eayrs and E.H. Ashton of the Department of Anatomy, Birmingham University.

File SZ/MOS(2)/4 consists of an account of a visit made by Zuckerman to the United States in 1952 to meet researchers conducting similar experiments there.

Administrative / Biographical History

The Land-Mine Detection Sub-Committee was established in 1948 under the chairmanship of Dr F.J. Wilkins of the Ministry of Supply To consider research into methods of detecting land mines and to initiate new lines of attack... To examine advances in scientific knowledge or technique which might have an important bearing on the problem of land mine detection [and] to report to the Land-Mine Defence Coordinating Committee.

The Sub-Committee came into being as a result of discussion of the problem of detection of land-mines by the Physics of Armaments Committee, and a paper that Solly Zuckerman wrote on the subject. Zuckerman was appointed a member of the Sub-Committee.
