The collection comprises of correspondence by Eleanor regarding polar exploration.

Administrative / Biographical History

Eleanor Isabella Franklin was born on 3 June 1824 in London, the daughter of the Arctic explorer, John Franklin, and the poet, Eleanor Anne Porden, who died in 1825. On his return from the British Naval Exploring Expedition [second Arctic Land expedition], 1825-1827, her father married Jane Griffin in 1828. John Franklin died on 11 June 1847 during the ill-fated British Naval Northwest Passage Expedition, 1845-1848. In 1849, Eleanor married the Reverend John Philip Gell. She died in 1860.
