Administrative / Biographical History
Geoffrey Goodman was born in 1922 (in 1939 he gave his birth year as 1921 in order to be eligible to join the Royal Air Force and retained this extra year for the rest of his life) and studied at the London School of Economics. He served in the Royal Air Force from 1941 to 1946 before beginning his career as a journalist, author and broadcaster. He was a reporter with the 'Manchester Guardian' from 1946 to 1947 and also worked for the 'Daily Herald' and 'The Sun'. He joined the 'Daily Mirror' in 1969 and was assistant editor from 1976 to 1986. During this period he was a member of the Royal Commission on the Press and joint author of the Minority Report.
Goodman received the Gerald Barry Award for Journalism, 1984-1985, and was founding editor of 'British Journalism Review'. His published work includes 'The Awkward Warrior - Frank Cousins: his life and times' (1979), 'The Miners' Strike' (1985), 'The State of the Nation' (1997), and 'From Bevan to Blair' (2003), a memoir of fifty years of political reporting.
Goodman died in Sept 2013 aged 91.

The papers relating to the Royal Commission on the Press were deposited by Mr Goodman in 1977. Those relating to Frank Cousins were deposited by him in May 2000.
