Scope and Content
Administrative / Biographical History
This item was presented by Mr Elliff of Ranskill, who bought it at an auction. The inscription on the inside cover of the album relates to a local Doncaster gentleman, Mr E W Jackson. Mr Jackson established a vehicle manufacturing firm, E Jackson and Son Ltd at its Frenchgate premises in 1904. These vehicles were sold under the name of Cheswold, after the nearby river. The firm abandoned vehicle manufacturing, however, after the outbreak of the war in 1914 when it began to undertake aeronautical and mechanical engineering work for the government. After world war one the firm became a distributor for the major motor manufacturers. The business ceased trading in 1983 not long after Mr Jackson's death.
