Administrative / Biographical History

May Jackson (nee Town) was born in 1910 and died in 1993, marrying in 1938. She trained to become a nurse at St. James's Hospital in Leeds, and later trained to become a midwife at Govan Maternity Cottage Hospital, qualifying in 1935. During her career, Jackson worked at hospitals in the North West of England, including Hartley Hospital in 1937, and was a district nurse in Burnley from 1938 and worked at Burnley General Hospital from 1939 to 1952, before moving to Bank Hall Maternity Hospital in 1952. Jackson moved to work in industry between 1952 and 1958, including working as a nurse at the Burnley-based cooker manufacturing firm Bellings, before leaving nursing in 1958 to run her own business.
