Records of The Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire Electric Power Company, 1901-1948

The collection comprises signed minute books. There are seven directors' minute books (BEDN 1) covering 1901-1948. They record the proceedings of the meetings of the company's board of directors. The early books concentrate on the financial and share aspects of the company while the later volumes offer more detail on the company's power generation and supply activities.

There are also two shareholders minute books covering 1908-1948 (BEDN 2). They contain minutes of meetings to which shareholders were invited to attend along with accompanying copies of accounts, lists of shareholders and notices of meetings.

The Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire Electric Power Company was incorporated in 1901 following the passing of the Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire Electric Power Act (1901, I Edward VII, Ch. CXXI). The company was indemnified by The Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire Electric Power Syndicate. Much of the company's administration took place in offices in Ilkeston, Derbyshire.

The company generated and supplied electricity to customers in Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire. The Ilkeston Corporation and the Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire Tramway Company were among its early customers. A power station was constructed next to the Manners Colliery at Ilkeston but coal was bought in from a number of different collieries in Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire. Another power station at Spondon in Derbyshire was constructed some time later. By the 1940s, the company had a monopoly in the two counties. The company was nationalised with the rest of the electric power industry in 1948 and its activities were taken over by the East Midlands Electricity Board.

The collection has been divided into two series by document type and within these series, items have been arranged chronologically.

The fate of the bulk of the company's archive is not known. The present collection consisting only of minute books, which survived in the records of the East Midlands Electricity Board, was given to The University of Nottingham's Department of Manuscripts and Special Collections in April 2000 by PowerGen.
