Administrative / Biographical History

Gwilym W. Owen (fl. 1957) of Barmouth, Merionethshire, was a local historian from a family of sailors; he undertook research into his relatives and St David's (Clogau) gold mine for a thesis. His grandfather was Captain Rees Edwards (1816-1877) of the 'Jane Brown'. His great-great-grandfather was Captain Edward Edwards (1756-1837) of the 'Unity'. The St David's Mine, Bontddu, near Barmouth, operated by St David's Gold and Copper Mines Ltd, formerly a copper mine, was found to contain gold in 1854. It was one of the few productive gold mines in Great Britain producing the well-known Clogau Gold.
