Administrative / Biographical History

In 1889 the Miners Federation of Great Britain was formed. In 1932 it changed to the Mineworkers Federation of Great Britain and in 1945 it became the National Union of Mineworkers. The South Wales Miners Federation was formed in 1898 and in 1945 it became the National Union of Mineworkers, South Wales area. The Yorkshire Miners' Association was formed in 1881 and in 1889 became a founder member of the Miners Federation of Great Britain. In 1864 the Northumberland Miners Mutual Confident Association was formed and in 1945 it became the Northumberland area of National Union of Mineworkers. In 1844 the Lancashire Miners Federation was formed and in 1897 it changed to the Lancashire and Cheshire Miners' Federation.
