Sir Otto Kahn-Freund 1900 - 1979

Kahn-Freund was born in Frankfurt am Main of Jewish parents, and was educated at Frankfurt University. In 1929 he became a judge of the Berlin labour court, but he was dismissed for opposition to Nazi policy and emigrated to England. He became a naturalised British citizen in 1940. He was a student at London School of Economics; assistant lecturer, 1936; professor, 1951. Kahn-Freund was called to the bar (Middle Temple), 1936. He played an important part in the establishment of labour law as an independent area of legal study, and was a member of the Royal Commission on Reform of Trade Unions and Employers' Associations, 1965. Kahn-Freund was appointed professor of comparative law, Oxford, and fellow of Brasenose College, 1964. He was a honourable bencher, Middle Temple, 1969 and became a QC, 1972. He was knighted, 1976. There is a list of his publications in his Selected Writings (1978).
