The United Patternmakers' Association was founded in 1872 in the north east of England and expanded rapidly by incorporating local societies in Glasgow, Leeds, London and elsewhere. The UPA was never a very large union. In response to technical changes which undermined its skilled craft base the UPA widened its scope and adopted the name Association of Patternmakers and Allied Craftsmen in 1969. In 1984 APAC transferred engagements to the Technical, Administrative and Supervisory Section (TASS), which in 1988 amalgamated with the Association of Scientific, Technical and Managerial Staffs to form the Manufacturing, Science and Finance Union.
