Scope and Content
Administrative / Biographical History
Richard Methuen Greaves (b. 1852) was the second son of John Whitehead Greaves (1807-80), owner of the Llechwedd Slate Quarries, Blaenau Ffestiniog, Merionethshire. Greaves undertook a world trip in 1873 and 1874. In 1885 he succeeded his brother, John Ernest Greaves (1847-1945), as general manager of the Llechwedd Slate Quarries. He owned Wern Home Farm, Tremadog, Caernarfonshire, and purchased the Bryncir estate, Dolbenmaen, Caernarfonshire, in about 1899. Greaves was interested in all things mechanical and instigated agricultural and domestic improvements on his estates. Wern was at one point converted into a Red Cross Home. It later came into the possession of Col. Martyn (or Martin) Williams-Ellis (1885-1968), nephew of R. M. Greaves.
