Scope and Content

Photocopies of documents and press cuttings relating to student protests at the presence of Patrick Harrington, a National Front activist, at the Polytechnic of North London, and subsequent legal proceedings.

Administrative / Biographical History

In 1984 fourteen tutors and heads of department at the Polytechnic of North London (now the University of North London) appealed against a High Court ruling that they should identify eighteen of their students who had defied a High Court order not to picket the college.

The picket stemmed from the presence at the college of Patrick Harrington, a National Front member. Harrington had obtained a court order banning demonstrations preventing him from attending lectures. The National Front photographed people who defied the order and applied to have them imprisoned. Three students who defied the order were identified and brought before the judge who decided not to imprison them after receiving assurances they would not repeat their contempt of court.
