Photographs of Entebbe

This material is held atRoyal Commonwealth Society Library

Scope and Content

A collection of loose prints measuring approximately 200 x 145 mm, with handwritten captions on the reverse. Photographs are by Alfred Lobo of Entebbe (only one print is stamped with Lobo's name but it is likely that the rest of the prints are also by him.

Administrative / Biographical History

Alfred Lobo, probably of Goan extraction, entered Government service in Entebbe, Uganda, in 1908, and in 1922 he started a commercial photographic business in Kampala. However, Lobo appears to have been a practising photographer in the early 1900s. His photographs appear in Playne's 'East Africa' (1907) and several of the photographs in the RCS collection date pre-1910. Alfred Lobo may have been the same person mentioned as A. Lobo, Locomotive Department, Uganda Railway, Nairobi, listed in 'The red book of East Africa' (1904).
