Scope and Content

Photocopies of lists of marriage licences issued by the Faculty Office, 1707-1955, and the Vicar-General of the Archbishop of Canterbury, 1694-1921, with an index of marriage licences issued by officials of Canterbury peculiars, 1684-1859.

Lambeth Palace Library holds the records of the Archbishop of Canterbury. The Archbishop of Canterbury is one of the authorities for issuing marriage licences for England and Wales.

The photocopies were given to Bodleian Library by the Lambeth Palace Librarian in 1964.

A calendar of the Vicar-General's marriage allegations, 1660-1694, by G.J. Armytage is printed in Harleian Society, vols. 30-31, 33-34, 1890-2. There is a typewritten index of the allegations for 1695-99 prepared for the Society of Genealogists by W.P. Haskett-Smith of which a photocopy is Bodleian R.2.256/31*.
