Scope and Content

Records of Wells, Hogge & Company relating to its operation and acquisition by Capital & Counties Bank, including balance sheets, correspondence, customers’ incidental papers, and amalgamation agreements.

Administrative / Biographical History

This bank was formed in 1830 through the amalgamation of Williamson & Wells (est. 1807) and Baldock and G & W Hogge (est. 1810). It was also known as the Biggleswade & Baldock Bank. The firm was closely associated with the local brewing industry. The slow decline of this industry precipitated the sale of the bank to Capital & Counties Bank (est. 1877) in 1893.
