The papers consist entirely of material relating to Turberville's research for his book on Welbeck Abbey. There are narrative drafts of various sections of the work and notes used in its preparation taken from a variety of historical sources. A few modern pamphlets are present and one eighteenth-century document concerning the settlement of the estate of Thomas Holles, Duke of Newcastle. Correspondents include the publishers Faber; agents for various Portland estates; the Duke of Portland; and Francis Needham, the Librarian at Welbeck.
During the period of Turberville's research, the vast archival holdings of the Cavendish-Bentinck Dukes of Portland were still housed at Welbeck Abbey itself. Much of the material used by Turberville, and present here in extracted form, is now part of the Portland Collection at the University of Nottingham.
