Administrative / Biographical History

The donor's grandfather occupied a large farm at Calne, specialising in sheep, corn and milk. His father moved from Compton Bassett, Wiltshire, to Dial Post, Horsham, Sussex in 1925. Store pigs were introduced in 1935 and the raising of sheep and corn abandoned. In 1925 he moved to Brightwell and purchased Highlands Farm. It was sold in 1964

Farm size: Highways Farm: about 1,000 acres; down and vale; owner-occupied; Highlands Farm: originally over 600 acres but the acreage slowly contracted to about 250 acres; owner occupied
