Scope and Content
Administrative / Biographical History
Newport and Pillgwenlly Waterworks Company was established by Act of Parliament in Newport, Monmouthshire, in 1846 in order to improve the supply and quality of water in the town. The company built several reservoirs and their related infrastructure. The Ynis-y-Fro Reservoir and Stow Hill service reservoir were completed in 1848, Pantyreos High Level Reservoir in 1878 and a second Ynis-y-Fro Reservoir in 1884. The limits of the Company's supply were increased in stages and by 1881 included Newport, Pillgwenlly, St Woolos, Malpas, Christchurch, Caerleon, Rogerstone and Bassaleg. By the late 19th century Newport Corporation took a greater interest in water supply provision and it took over the Company in 1888.
