Scope and Content

The Backward Look: account of (mostly) immediate Haldane and Stevenson ancestors of James Haldane-Stevenson 1974

Administrative / Biographical History

Rev James Patrick Haldane-Stevenson was born at Llandaff, Wales on 17 March 1910 . His mother was a great-grand-daughter of Robert Haldane, whose Airthrey Estate is now the University of Stirling campus. His father’s family was connected with the engineering firm Dick & Stevenson. Both his parents came from Airdrie. After university, he trained for the ministry and was ordained to a Lambeth curacy in 1935 . During the Second World War he served as a Territorial Chaplain in Flanders and Italy. He continued Army service after the War, as commandant of a chaplaincy Centre for conducting Christian leadership in Austria, but resigned in 1955 and emigrated to Australia. He was vicar of North Balwyn, Victoria, from 1959-1980 ; and was appointed Honorary Assistant of St Paul’s Manuka, in 1984. He contributed widely to religious debate in Australia both in lectures and print. His autobiography, Beyond the Bridge (1973 ), reflected on his fortunate background and his concern for those less fortunate in life.
