Administrative / Biographical History

The Amalgamated Society of Textile Workers and Kindred Trades was formed in 1919 as a successor to the Leek Textile Federation. It was formed from six local organisations: the Amalgamated Society of Silk Pickers, the Amalgamated Society of Braid Workers and Kindred Trades, the Amalgamated Society of Silk and Cotton Dyers, the Amalgamated Society of Women Workers, the Amalgamated Society of Silk, Spinners, Throwsters and Reelers and Leek Spun Silk Dressers Union. In 1992 it changed to the Union of Textile Workers and in 2002 it merged with Amicus. In 2007 Amicus amalgamated with the Transport and General Workers Union to form Unite.
