National Amalgamated Union of Shop Assistants, Warehousemen and Clerks

This collection includes: rules; annual reports and balance sheets; Coventry branch records.

The National Amalgamated Union of Shop Assistants, Warehousemen and Clerks was originally called the National Union of Shop Assistants. Formed at a meeting held between the East London Shop Assistants Association and the Warehouse Assistant's Union in 1891 the Union affiliated to the Trades Union Congress shortly after formation. By 1914 the membership had grown to 81250. A number of smaller organisations transferred their engagements to the Union over the following years including the National Association of Grocer's Assistants (1920) and the Dental Assistant's Association (1921). In 1947 the Union amalgamated with the National Union of Distributive and Allied Workers to form the Union of the Shop, Distributive and Allied Workers with a membership of 374000.

The letter of 1907 formed part of the deposits mainly made by the Amalgamated Union of Engineering Workers (Engineering Section) over the period 1984-1997 (MSS.259).

The records of the Coventry branch (MSS.117) were deposited in the Centre on indefinite loan in 1975 by W.P. Thomson, through the good offices of George Hodgkinson. MSS.490 was transferred from the University Library.
