Scope and Content

Illuminated roll.

Turkish official document addressed to the governor of Jannina in Albania. It notes that permission to trade in Europe, Persia and India has been granted to an Ottoman subject Kirqu, son of Kuli. One of his two servants, Petro, son of [Ostio], evidently a Christian, is freed, under a decree of Murram AH 1260, from the necessity of paying jizyah, on certain conditions and the governor is to take note of this. Name and seal of Hasan Ra'fat. Dated first days of Rabi' I, AH1261/AD1845. Enclosed is a receipt form for payment of telegram sent from Turkey in 1902 by Charles W Shute; original metal tube preserved. Catalogued by DM Dunlop.
