Scope and Content

The collection comprises:

  • Cash book, 15 January 1844-5 September 1850 (MS 652/1).
  • Bundle of loose financial papers, c.26 September 1849-c.22 November 1850 (MS 652/2).

This collection represents a fraction of the records that the company would have produced. The few items in it are chance survivals and were unlikely to have been retained originally for their archival value.

Administrative / Biographical History

The history of the firm of J. and J.W. Leavers is poorly documented. The few records in this collection would appear to suggest that the firm ceased trading in 1850 under that name. It is possible that it was a predecessor of the firm of John Wells Leavers of Spaniel Row, Nottingham which is recorded under the heading 'lace manufacturers' in the 1855 Post Office Directory. The 1881 Kelly's Directory records that the firm of John Wells Leavers, silk and cotton yarn merchant, was operating at 34 Hounds Gate, Nottingham at the time. By 1895, no such firm is recorded in the Kelly's Directory although a private resident, John Wells Leavers, was living at The Hermitage, Hermitage Walk, The Park, Nottingham in that year.

No connection between this firm of Leavers and that of John Levers, lace machinery inventor and manufacturer has been established.

Arrangement

The collection has been divided by document type into two series. As the collection is very small and accurate dating is not possible, arrangement of items has taken place numerically within series.
