This material is held atRoyal Commonwealth Society Library

Scope and Content

A scrapbook of cuttings from newspapers of the Straits Settlements concerning events in the colony. Much of the volume is concerned with Brown's involvement with the Legislative Council. There are articles regarding his disputed nomination by the Penang Chamber of Commerce in 1893, and his appointment to the Council in 1894 and 1897. There is also extensive coverage of the Council's work, including newscuttings on the passage of bills regarding harbours, Indian immigration, liquor, opium and the railways, and articles mentioning Brown's work. Other items in the volume include newscuttings on government revenue and expenditure, which are accompanied by handwritten notes, and articles concerning the decision to remove Imperial troops from Penang in 1897. There are a number of blank pages. The scrapbook is accompanied by a folder of newscuttings found loose within it. These include a special supplement from 'The Straits Times', 3 August 1882, on the case brought against Lewis James Fraser for cheating the Hong Kong and Shanghai Corporation.
