Administrative / Biographical History
Thomas Berkeley of Spetchley, Worcestershire, married Mary, only daughter and heiress of the Davies family of Clytha, Monmouthshire. Their second son, John Berkeley inherited Clytha and was succeeded by his son Robert, who on succeeding to Spetchley, sold Clytha to his father-in-law, Richard Lee of Great Delce in Kent. Richard Lee sold Clytha to his brother-in-law, William Jones, third son of John Jones of Llanarth, who died in 1805 and left the estate to his great-nephew, William Jones, afterwards William Herbert. He was succeeded by his son, Reginald Herbert. According to the 1873 return of owners of land, William Herbert of Clytha House owned 4,543 acres, all in Monmouthshire, with an annual rental of £10,624.
