Thomas Artemus Jones Papers

This collection contains a wide variety of material relating to the law in general and specifically Sir Roger Casement's trial, the Welsh language in court and the case of Jones v. Hulton. Documents include notes, letters and reflections on the trials. Also contains material relating to honours and awards received by Sir Thomas Artemus Jones including letters of appointment, privileges and letters of congratulation; material relating to his publications, including duplicate chapters and rough notes on certain chapters of Without my Wig (1944) and notes for articles and speeches; general correspondence; newspaper cuttings; photographs and printed articles. Also contains conveyance documents and other material of relating to properties in Llanrwst, Denbighshire and Bangor, Caernarfonshire.

Sir Thomas Artemus Jones (1871-1943), Judge, was the youngest of the six sons of a Denbigh stonemason. He left school early and before he was sixteen became a reporter on a local paper, beginning a career that spanned journalism, politics, historical research and the law. Among his best known legal work is his defence of Sir Roger Casement, his libel action against the Sunday Chronicle and his involvement in the campaign for repeal of the Statute of Henry VIII, which forbade the use of the Welsh language in courts. He was chairman of the conscientious objectors tribunal during World War II.

Towards the end of his life, he moved from Denbighshire and settled in Bangor becoming more involved with the University, having delivered a series of lectures on international relations and been elected its Vice President. He was awarded an honorary degree of Doctor of Laws from the University of Wales.

Material is arranged in chronological order according to record type and incorporated into the General Collection of Bangor Manuscripts .
