Scope and Content
Administrative / Biographical History
In 1910 , John Stewart , a sale and purchase broker from Glasgow, Scotland, purchased the vessel Corundum which sank in 1914. The Yewdale was purchased in 1923 and this was followed by the purchase of more ships. In the 1920s , John Stewart purchased a number of war surplus engines and planned to sell them for use in tugs. When they did not sell Stewart had coasters built around them by Scotts of Bowling , shipbuilders and repairers, Bowling, West Dunbartonshire, Scotland . These were completed between 1928 and 1931 and their size and ability to carry heavy loads made them useful for the east coast coal trade to the river Thames in London and northern France. The company was incorporated as a limited liability company, John Stewart & Co Shipping Ltd , in 1934 . John Stewart died two years later and Ian and Edgar Macfarlane then purchased the company. During the 1939-1945 World War the majority of the company's ships continued to be active in the east coast coal trade. Although their first motorship was delivered in 1939 , the company continued to use steam up until 1960 . The company was acquired by Carita Investments Ltd , Dumfries, Scotland, in c1979 but continued to trade as John Stewart & Co Shipping Ltd until it was dissolved in 1991 .
