Deeds of properties held by Messers Albert Ball (Nottingham) Limited, estate agents, 1896-1921

The collection comprises:

• Conveyance of land at Sedgley Park, Prestwich, Lancashire by Richard Fort to John Jones. With plan. 1896 (MS 596/1).
• Conveyance of land at Sedgley Park, Prestwich, Lancashire by William Burgess to Ernest Griffen. 1905 (MS 596/2);
• Mortgage of land at Sedgley Park by Ernest Griffen to the Refuge Assurance Company Limited. 1905 (MS 596/3);
• Conveyance of land at Sedgley Park, Prestwich, Lancashire by E.E. Griffen to Albert Ball. 1906 (MS 596/4);
• Conveyance of two plots of land at Radcliffe-On-Trent by Nottinghamshire County Council to Messers Albert Ball (Nottingham) Limited. With plan. 1921 (MS 596/5).

The firm of Messers Albert Ball (Nottingham) Ltd, estate agents, first appears in trade directories for the town in 1905. It was set up by Albert Ball, a prosperous master plumber who had expanding his business into dealing in land and property. Interested in local affairs, he first represented Nottingham Castle Ward as a Councillor and later became Lord Mayor. In 1905, Ball was living in the select Park district of Nottingham and his firm operated from offices at 9 Cheapside.

Ball and his business moved to a number of different, and more prestigious addresses during the following years. By 1921, Ball had been knighted and the firm, Albert Ball (Nottingham) Limited, had become a limited company with offices at 24, Wheeler Gate, Nottingham. In trade directories, the company began to be known as a valuer rather than a land and estate agency. Albert Ball disappears from trade directories after 1941 although the business is still recorded in a 1951 edition.

Albert's four children included Albert Ball (1896-1917), a distinguished airman who flew for the Royal Flying Corps during the First World War, died in action and was awarded the Victoria Cross.
