Herbert Agar Collection

Herbert Agar was a qualified surgeon who specialised in obstetrics and gynaecology. He was born on 10 December 1907, in Grimsby, Yorkshire. He was a student at Wintringham Secondary High School from 1912 to 1926 and completed the courses of higher studies in Physics, Chemistry, Electricity and Magnetism, Pure and Applied Mathematics, French, English, History, Geography, Latin and Art. Later, he attained a bachelor's degree in Science, Medicine and Surgery at the University of Leeds in 1932 and in Surgery and Medicine as an external student at the University of London in 1933.

Agar worked for the General Infirmary in Leeds, Ancoats Hospital in Manchester, and St. James Hospital in Leeds as a resident surgical officer. He had great experience of performing both major and minor surgery. For major operations, he performed around 2,500 operations on the stomach, gall bladder, genito-urinary system, and other parts. Agar worked as a tutor and delivered lectures to pupil midwives at the University of Leeds, the Maternity Hospital and Hospital for Women in Leeds. He also actively attended gatherings as a member of the Gynaecological Visiting Society (G.V.S.). Agar died on 25th February 1995.

The items in this collection consist of photographs, correspondence, certificates, lecture notes and slides, printed materials, and Reynolds & Branson invoices compiled by H. Agar. The collection also includes the relevant archives of his wife, Lillian Hetherington Agar, who was a trained nurse at St. James Hospital.
