Scope and Content
Administrative / Biographical History
In April 1836 a meeting was held at the Royal Hotel in Edinburgh, Scotland, to promote the building of a railway between the "Scottish Metropolis" of Edinburgh and Dundee, Scotland, travelling through the Fife region. A survey had already been undertaken by the engineers Stevenson & Sons of a line to run from Edinburgh via Leith, Newhaven, Granton, Burntisland, Kinghorn, Kircaldy, Dysart and Cupar Fife and then into Dundee. The line was to be 38 miles long. It was decided to form a company, the Edinburgh & Dundee Railway Co on the 26 April 1836 with a capital of £500,000. This was to be raised by the issuing of 1,000 shares costing £50 each and a prospectus was issued. A deposit of £2 was required per share, the balance to be paid when the Act of Parliament allowing the building of the railway was granted. The Act of Parliament was not obtained and a dividend of £1 per share was returned to investors. Stevenson & Sons demanded £210 costs for their work which the company refused to pay as they felt the money was due only if the Act of Parliament was granted. They did agree however to pay £105 if Stevenson & Sons handed over all the plans and papers relating to the railway. The company was wound up in 1837 .
