Records of Newport Improvement Commission, 1826-1830.

Administrative / Biographical History

Newport Improvement Commission was established by the Newport Improvement Act 1826. It was empowered to carry out various local government functions in Newport, Monmouthshire, including providing lighting, paving, water and regulating the police. The Commissioners were originally 80 in number, declining to 30 by 1850. The Commission was abolished in 1850 when the Borough Council adopted the Public Health Act 1848 which created Newport Local Board of Health.
