Papers of: Evans, Sir Charles Arthur Lovatt (1884-1968)

The papers consist almost entirely of biographical and personal material, memorabilia etc. covering the whole of Evans's career. Very little remains relating to his scientific research. Many of the documents were worked over by Evans during his retirement and bear his annotations, comments and reflections. Items B.1 and B.2 consist of photographs of Lovatt Evans and his collaborators, many of them identified and dated by Lovatt Evans. His book of press-cuttings (A.21) indexed and annotated, also contains material of interest relating to his colleagues and fields of study. There is material in section D. relating to Starling's Principles of human physiology, of which Evans edited the 2nd to 13th editions.

Evans was born in Birmingham in 1884. He was a pupil and collaborator of E.H. Starling, with whom he worked at University College, London, 1911-1916, and at the Royal Army Medical College at Millbank, 1916-1918, where Starling was in charge of the Anti-gas Department. After a brief stay at Leeds University as Professor of Experimental Physiology, he returned to London to work in the department of H.H. Dale at the newly established National Institute for Medical Research, 1919-1922. He was Professor of Physiology at St Bartholomew's Hospital Medical College, London, 1923-1926, and Jodrell Professor of Physiology, University College, London, 1926-1949. During the Second World War he worked at the Chemical Defence Experimental Station at Porton Down, Wiltshire and on retirement from the Jodrell Chair he was given research facilities at Porton. He died in 1968. He was elected FRS in 1925 and knighted in 1951.

These papers were placed in the Contemporary Medical Archives Centre (now Archives and Manuscripts following merger with Western Manuscripts) in 1977 by the Contemporary Scientific Archives Centre (now the National Cataloguing Unit for the Archives of Contemporary Scientists); the CSAC had received them for cataloguing from Mrs Yvonne Lovatt Schou, younger daughter of Sir Charles Lovatt Evans, in 1976 (CMAC accession no 45).
