Scope and Content

One volume contains a few newspaper cuttings from November 1887 about the death of John Crabtree to 1940, the centenary of the company.

Manuscript notes on the history of Bradford written in 1882 have been inserted, detailing particularly the changes in industry during the decade 1872-1882.

Ff.13-112 are paginated 1-200 and nearly all the folios after f.9 are blank. Ff. 1-12 comprise a thumb index omitting the letters J and U. Bound with boards covered with black leather and the title 'Newspaper Cuttings' embossed in gilt lettering on the outside front cover.

Administrative / Biographical History

John Crabtree and Sons Limited, of Thornton Road, then Wigan Street and Sunbridge Road, Bradford, were established in 1840 as mohair merchants. By the twentieth century they had become wool, noils, laps, and waste merchants.
