Scope and Content

The collection is composed of letters to various individuals including: those to H. Massie; those to Frances Bickley; letter to Mrs. Allhusen; letter to W. E. Henley; letter to Brookfields; letter to Frank Harris; letter to Miss Wynne; and, a batch of circa 20 letters including correspondence with Courtney Hill, Mr. Cooper, Mr. Smalley, 'My dear Page', Mr. Ashcroft, Miss Neaves, Mr. Deane, Mr. Rideing, and unnamed correspondents. Also includes manuscript letters written by his wife Leonora on the subject of literature.

Administrative / Biographical History

The writer Andrew Lang was born on 31 March 1844. He was educated at Edinburgh Academy and he studied at St. Andrews University and Balliol College, Oxford. He was an Honorary Fellow of Merton College, Oxford. He became a Fellow of the Royal British Academy in 1906. His publications over nearly forty years included Ballads and lyrics of old France (1872), Life, letters, and diaries of Sir Stafford Northcote (1890), Homer and the epic (1893), The making of religion(1898),The mystery of Mary Stuart (1901), and A defence of Sir Walter Scott and the Border minstrelsy (1910). Andrew Lang died on 20 July 1912.
