The Brian Jackson Collection

This collection comprises 200 boxes containing papers, diaries, reports, correspondence, press cuttings, publications and a small quantity of qualitative research material arising from Brian Jackson's life work. The material is arranged thematically and covers the following topics: 'Socialist martyrs'; ethnicity and world affairs; working-class community; fatherhood; under-fives (childminding); Open University; education and mass media.

Brian Jackson graduated from Cambridge University with a degree in English. This collection comprises what remains of the research papers gathered during the course of his career. He taught and undertook research in primary schools for four years, publishing Streaming: An Education System in Miniature (1964), and then studied working class children moving through grammar school (Education and the Working Class 1962, with Dennis Marsden) and finally helped to establish the National Extension College. He was Founder and Director of the Advisory Centre for Education, publishers of Where, for several years, and a teaching member of the English faculty at Cambridge. His books include Working Class Community (1968) with Dennis Marsden, Childminder (1979) with Sonia Jackson, and at the time of his death in 1982, he had just completed Fatherhood.

In consultation with academic colleagues, the library special collections acquisitions staff evaluate collections by assessing their relevance to the teaching and research interests of the University.

The collection was acquired and prepared for archiving by Qualidata in 1999 and deposited in the NSPSCA in 2002.
