Scope and Content
Administrative / Biographical History
Matthew Henry (1662-1714), son of Philip Henry, became a Presbyterian minister like his father. He was a brilliant preacher, active in evangelical ministry throughout Cheshire, Staffordshire and Lancashire, although he was often persecuted for his non-conformism. He worked mainly in Chester, moving to Hackney for the last few years of his life. As well as an impassioned preacher, he was a prolific writer, his best known work being Exposition of the Old and New Testament. The ms text differs only very slightly from the published version.
