Administrative / Biographical History
Christopher Shackle studied Persian and Turkish at Oxford, following his BA with a Diploma and BLitt in Social Anthropology. He joined the South Asia Department at the School of Oriental and African Studies in 1966, and was appointed Professor in 1985. He served as Head of Department from 1983 to 1987 and as Pro-Director of SOAS from 1997 until 2003. Elected a Fellow of the British Academy in 1990, he received the 2004 Award of the Royal Asiatic Society and was given Pakistan's highest award for the arts, the Sitara-i-Imtiaz, in 2005.
